Decrease the shotgun "accuracy"

Suggestion type: FGunZ

Suggestion description:

The 20% lowered spread to increase accuracy doesn't feel "accurate" at all - it's just a constant 10-20 damage hit spree for some of us. People are able to block 3 full shots/36 pellets with a single block, which seems ridiculous. The previous patch with vanilla spread and the new antilead seemed to be pretty good after a long time, and it's what Gunz players have always been used to.

My suggestion is to either bring back the vanilla spread or reduce it only by 10% rather than 20%, so people with either preferences can compromise equally. Some people tried the more "accurate" spread only for 3 weeks and act like they can't play Gunz without it anymore. What about rest of the players who are used to the vanilla spread since the beginning? The anti-lead seems to be good and there are no more 0 damage hits, but the spread still continues to be an issue for many of us.

I'm not going to post a poll because several active players don't use the forums, and I don't think considering votes of inactive players who only lurk the forums are an accurate way to determine whether changes are required or not. I'm hoping we can test a slightly lowered accuracy value and see how things go.

I can second this. The blocking thing is so true

Blocking is one thing, but damage just feels all around inconsistent. So inconsistent that I can no longer trust my instincts as to when someone is supposed to die, after playing these last few updates (and just V8 in general), I got used to the fact that people might require a few more shots than they should, and that isn't a good thing.
If I know I hit 3 good shots, I want the person to die, I don't want to look in the corner of my eye to see a lousy 90 damage.

It feels like the whole SG game right now is RNG based, I can feel it in turbo too, sometimes requiring 3-4 close range shots to kill someone with 2 LBs (before the update that made people invincible for a short span of time too). I might just be hitting bad, but I don't think I could be so inconsistent to a point where I can 3-4 shot one round, and then do ~160 dmg with 8-10 hits the next round.

I think the anti-lead is good now, I haven't really had any issues regarding 0 damage shots and stuff... but the issue with the damage consistency remains, and it feels very much RNG based, and for a game like this - a skill based game - it's bad.

I know some people get so frustrated by this that they literally quit the server and go play GunZ elsewhere. I don't want FG to die, as that's the only server I play, but the player count keeps decreasing, and with that, my motivation to play the game, and I'm sure many people feel the same way.

I'd say play around with the spread, I still don't see why you are worried about trying out static spread, thinking that it is too much of a massive game changer, as people are too "used" to the vanilla spread. With that logic, I hope you realize that 20% spread change is also a massive game changer, and static spread could POSSIBLY have a few nice advantages such as:
-> No RNG shots (as no RNG spread), if you hit well, you get your damage (people complain about random spread on games like Fortnite too).
-> Easier to validate with anti-lead (I'm not sure how AL works on GunZ, but static spread sounds like something that could help with making it easier to validate/confirm shots/hits).
-> No RNG.
-> Easier to spot hackers, as you don't have to consider random RNG pellets regarding damage etc..
-> And did I mention that there would be no RNG involved with static spread?

TLDR: Static spread for the win. Please try it out, and hey, if it doesn't work, change it back. :]

About the block part - just aim the feet/legs, now with the reduced spread its even better since your pellets will actually hit feet/legs unlike the vanilla spread where your pellets could go anywhere.

No one can tell whether those shots were actually perfectly landed on the enemy or not, But I might be wrong too so dont go offensive you scrub.
btw on the first clip you admitted later on that you hit the lamp or whatever was that lol

increasing the hitbox also affects sword hits and can cause weird things like the way nades are registered to hit you, aswell as being hit while your model is behind a wall but your hitbox isnt, which is why i cant support this idea.

And for anyone wanting to say that this is about unlucky spread, yes, yes it is.
And that's the problem, there shouldn't be an element of luck involved with the spread, as it makes the game less about skill and more about luck.

To add to what I said earlier, the spread does not have to completely static, you could have 10-20 nice templates that make it feel like it's random, but still consistent.

It is very funky. The spread can still be made "random", but at least put an equal amount of pellets in each corner so it feels more consistent, this is just straight up bad.

I believe this is why players might move on to other servers, and I don't see how it could be too hard to fix, especially when perfect solutions are suggested every other day.
Like this suggestion by my beautiful goblin friend EternalBeast, a reply would be nice, because when we make these threads, it literally feels like we care about the server more than the admins when we get no reply back, please at least acknowledge the fact that you see these threads. :/

I personally don't agree with this suggestion, as I think however big the spread would be, it would still be inconsistent at times (e.g. pellets landing in completely different spots every time, sometimes not even on every corner of the spread circle). Reduced spread reduces that problem, but doesn't fix it, and I don't think vanilla spread will fix it either.

Fully static spread isn't required, but if the spread was more consistent, e.g. had value ranges for where each pellet could land instead of being fully random, it would still feel and look random, but also feel more fair to the players.
If you don't know what I mean exactly then I am happy to expand on this further, I think it's a nice & elegant solution to this problem.

Easy. I have done 2 static patterns before.
1 which is exactly like yours in the image, and one which is like this https://puu.sh/xrmNW/b13b83cf58.jpg (the better thing here is that 1 pellet always hits in the center, where with the 4x4 all pellets could miss the target if too far away).
Both are even still in the FG code (but disabled).
Adding a small random offset would be easy to do and possibly be a good solution. I can test it out and play with the values.

That's something I can get behind. No more random spray. But rather standard variation in the pattern. I pellet in mid is the way to go so we dont have to purposefully miss the target longrange to land a single pellet.

It's done. Just need to test it with staff and players to adjust values.

Currently there's a limit on how far to the center the outer ring can go, I would say it's somewhere like this if you are extremely lucky:

Just a bit of testing and value adjustments are all it needs I think.

You can modify the center image to overlap for the closer you get, modify it to recognize the correct dist. to the player and increase/decrease the size of the center circle internally, dont use images for it because it will give a performance drop (considering fps) with the image changing so quickly all the time, instead just hardcode the circumference values for one circle inside another(The current hitbox), increasing and decreasing the inner circle with just code, changing the inner circles circumference bigger or smaller, setting the outer circle( the whole hitbox) as the limit

Its not the bullets that are the prob, you dont want to make it sovthat if 1 bullet hits, they are all adjusted to hit the circle. Thats why the spread was how it was before. Its the hitbox thats the issue

Increase and decrease the circles to mirror the distance of the player, it wouldnt take much code and would solve distance/bullet and damage ratios all at once

Images aren't used anywhere in code.

Are you messing up the word hitbox with spray pattern? Do you want to modify the spray pattern of shotguns based on distance to the player?

Modifying the inner ring based on player distance really isn't a good thing, I think.

The difference in weapons is the accuracy of them. Shotguns wouldnt be the only thing affected by it, but it would mess with rockets and nades, so i suppose its not the best of ideas

1) Download this gunz.exe: http://launcher.fgunz.net/dev/gunz.exe

2) Replace the gunz.exe in your FGunZ folder by this new gunz.exe

3) Double-click gunz.exe to run it. (don't use Launcher, it would overwrite your gunz.exe!)

4) Connect to dev server. (this gunz.exe will not work on the live server, if you want to play on the live server you will have to run your launcher, which will patch your gunz.exe back to the live version)

Your feedback is important to shape the pattern. You decide how and if I should change the pattern, make the spray tighter, wider, more random, less random or only make specific parts more/less random or tighter/wider (e.g. the inner ring, outer ring, etc).

Updated the gunz.exe in #58.

This is just for people who won't bother going on the dev. server. Spread looks a lot more consistent as you can see.

Did plenty of 1v1/air duel with Shang. And it feels great, at times when I did little DMG, it felt fair because I knew that the hits that I have landed were weak, and the hits that I know I landed well, did do plenty of DMG. We tested with lvl 1 SGs, and it felt better than live does with LBs right now. We did test LBs later on, and they feel just as good, just do more DMG of course.

Spread also looks really cool, and the 1 guaranteed pellet is an amazing thing, makes hitting across castle bridges etc. very satisfying...

I mean, looking at the video, you weren't really in PB range the moment you shot, so couldn't expect much damage. Now looking at the video in 0,25x speed I can see that you actually moved the crosshair to the left of the character a moment before/when you shot. So you weren't really on character the moment you shot to be honest. You were pretty off actually. Watch it in 0,25x on YouTube to see it.

Your aim was good when watching the video in full speed, but in 0,25x you see you really just moved your crosshair to the left, away from the character, the moment you shot.

I see I see. Thanks for the feedback. I would like to hear from them. It could be that the inner ring is a little too wide, I could make the inner ring a little tighter so more of the inner ring bullets hit if you're on target. Maybe that improves it, but maybe that makes shotguns a little too strong on long range. Or maybe people just misjudge their own aim.

The vanilla spread from V7 is gunz vanilla spread, which is the same spread we had from February 2nd to February 5th and the one many people complained about (due to the inconsistency) after playing with the 20% reduced spread. That's why I went back to 20% reduced spread on February 5th. So the current spread in V8 is really just vanilla spread but 20% tighter, which makes it a little less random and more consistent, but still inconsistent. Vanilla is not consistent at all as you can tell, plus see the picture I posted a few pages before. Vanilla spread means bullets can land anywhere in the huge circle, they aren't even more likely to land in the center. Just anywhere. Very inconsistent from that point of view. The semi-static spread of the dev server is much better compared to that. But yeah, I'm ready to adjust it. Just need opinions.

This is why it will never be perfect for everyone. I say just make it have more consistency and be done with it. At least the rogue pellets are gone. If your aim is generally good then you will do more damage than if your aim is generally bad. It's not complicated, it's actually very simple.

Okay played the dev serv briefly with a friend, overall opinion is it works fairly well the only issue I've found so far is it seems to be a bit inconsistent with fast paced moves like LD, i'm not sure how the animation cancel will affect any of this or rather if it does at all, works much better up close for pbs overall good job so far, i'll release more info when i play more.

Haven't played a lot with it but thusfar it seems consistant and damage is fair with the hits you pull off. Yes ofcourse 10 damage shots still happen, BanRays video is a good example. Just gotta learn to hit the center of the character for the most damage, its how shotguns work in any shooter.

Having complaints now is basically saying: i want to hit half ass shots and do pb damage

new spread feels like a rebalance of shotguns imo. it feels good on close range but doesn't really do much damage on medium/long range.

i prefer the 20% spread (current spread on live servers)

Is the current spread on the test server as wide as the vanilla spread, or is it reduced by 20% and simply has new pellet patterns? If it's the former, can you let us test it with a larger/bigger spread value (increase it by 10%?)

Instead of suggesting decreasing the spread of the shotgun? why dont try come up with a new twist with CWS. cw is the most attractable for most players. AE Issue still happens alot when every1 to me is 50 ping. once a player leave by the next match up hes gonna be ae except those who didnt leave?

That's not what I suggested. Read my first post again. Decreased accuracy = wider spread = making it more similar to what the game's spread originally was. The tighter (reduced) spread is an issue for some of us, and I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest changes that will restore the game to its original state or something close to it.

I think this semi-static spray has the potential to be an improvement to the game, it just has to be adjusted correctly.

That might mean you want the inner ring to be tighter (= more damage on distance). Or more pellets for the inner ring.

Neither nor. It's pretty much unrelated to that value. It has its own custom values. Sure I can make the outer ring 10% wider.

So I guess I will make the inner ring a little tighter and the outer ring a little wider.

Modified the spray based on feedback (inner ring tighter, outer ring wider) and made it less random.

A very different take on this issue now. This came up as a random idea, showing you what we could do.
For better balance I changed shotguns to 25 pellets (half damage per pellet) and added a seamless static circle consisting of 3 rings + center. Go try it and tell me what you think.

Not sure if you knew but you can actually go on the dev server and test the stuff I'm posting here and give us your feedback, which would actually be useful to shape the server and improve it instead of ranting 'yall shit cant aim' without contributing anything to the thread. If you don't like the spray change, so be it. That is important feedback, too. But at least test it before you post. If you didn't even test any of these changes, your feedback has zero value.

I tried the latest 3 new spreads and think that each and every one of them surpass the one we have right now on the live server.
The latest 12 pellet spread felt great, however it had some major flaws. At medium to long ranges you did more damage by missing the target on purpose. So for example leading 30-100 ping depending on the range of the target gave you more damage.

The latest spread with 25 pellets feel really good. The damage is consistent on all ranges, except while playing long range (town middle maximum range) you deal more damage while leading 10 ping instead of actually hitting the target on the center of mass. (15dmg to 10 with lbs)
Damage while moving, especially with latedash. No longer feels like you're sacrificing damage for movement since the damage feels consistent even while moving.

More opinions please. I would like to know if this is better than what we have on the live server. Btw due to shotguns being a little OP with that new 25 pellet spray I would reduce all SG damage by 1 to fix that. So you should rather test it with 9 dmg SGs right now, not 10 damage LBs.

I will not include this spray in the next live server update yet (not enough feedback), but rather a small change for better pellet distribution to improve shotgun spray slightly.

This is exactly how the current spread works right now - accurate aim = high dmg, less accurate aim = low dmg.
Theres no reason to implement this new thing it will only make things worse as you stated the game becomes HARDER which is ALREADY hard enough.
Please stop messing around the spread and any other stuff like hitbox.

I agree that thats how it should be too, static spread is the most logical spread simply because gunz is a skill based game. However, judging by the servers position, implementing a static spread might not be a good idea. The static spread will only benefit highly accurate players, which is now only a very little percentage of the community. I don't think the server is in a position to make the game harder for casual players. Sadly, catering to cwer's isnt a good approach anymore.
Static spread would've also been greatly beneficial when it comes to reviewing reports for hb/ab/af and any other enhance for aiming. But ohwell.

However, i feel that the discussion for reducing the number of spread patterns might still be a good idea for a balance between both competitive and casual players.
Tweaking the spread % for casual players and reducing the spread patterns for competitive players.

Not really, the live server's spread is still RNG based. It is not as OP for accurate players than the test server with static spread

I will do a few optional (and experimental) changes next update and we will see how it goes from there.
