My very first map in progress

Hello all! Today, I decided to make a map. I asked some developers like StephanM because I didn't have any idea... So he gave me some tips for my ideas and the one that I used was: make maps from other games.

That's exactly what I'm trying to do, of course it isn't going to be that perfect since it's my very first map and infinity ward developers' made that map.

Ok. This is Highrise (a Call of Duty: Modern warfare 2 map)

First of all, I decided to do the basic model: just squares, and some walls - the outside (middle) - then the inside: roof, tables, chairs, glasses (extremes) - and finally the details of course like helicopters, some gas barrels, etc etc.

I'm posting here my images to show you how my project is going on and to give you the possibility to comment my work.

Hmm. I see a lot of problems with it, yet it is in progress and it is your first map, so I cannot judge just yet. Finish it up so I can judge and criticize :P.

Lol. I just worked in it for less than 1 hour, that's why it's not too complex: just boxes.

Ahhh that level is so annoying 24/7 camping in the buildings QQ.

Anyway, keep in mind that you can change the grid spaces (1,2,3,4) so you can make smaller stuff.

Other then that you've gone with a good approach of doing the layout first which is a good idea, i'd really like to see more progress :).

I started with this map, because the others were so much big and detailed. This one has the size just perfect for gunz tdm.

Size texture and use new textures :).
Make your walls less thick 'n use caulk on the end :D.

Well mostly I try to use the right texture to get a view of it :).

Thanks for the source, but, how do I add the textures? All my textures are on .tga but once I download one from that site, they come in .jpg

I will upload pictures everyday I hope :)

Radiant accepts almost every common Image Filetype.
Png,Bmp,Tga,Jpg,Gif (no animated ones)...
Just be sure that there are no spaces in the name or the folder.
Also, if you add a new folder for textures, dont forget to add the folder aswell...

Map size is 8mb at this point.

Added a border all over the map(grass) and made a little house (with oustide and inside different textures) and a tunnel.

Well , 8 MB is realy much for gunz , thats like Dungeon , the one maiet made.
Except highrise is very small compared to Dungeon and GunZ will probably have to load a lot of textures at the same time.
Might work fine on your computer but most people that play gunz have a 25 euro computer.

Dungeon 2 is 8/10MB Dungeon is like 4/5MB.
But he needs to caulk in the end (saves a little amount of KB's).
Good your making progress but you need to change the textures a bit inside and outside (will come later I guess).

Best would possibly be to let all of his textures be resized by some online image editor ( or do it yourself of course ) results are that there will a bit less detail in your textures but it would reduce the mapsize by 2 times without a problem.

Ever since i started editing FTemple map i also used new textures , what i did was completely caulk my map ( Select all brushes with pushing I ) and then new textures , my map became 700 kb's down from 3500kb's and it looks a lot better now as well :p.

I took your advice and I half sized it but it's still too big. (10mb's now).
I will wait for Stephan's answer and I hope the size will go down.

Befor someone sends Devil a "tutorial" on how to add external models
i would like to see if he can figure it on his own.
Its not even hard, it just takes some brain and reading abbilitys.
Look into the original Maps's xml files.

Also, fail.
Items wont show on where you place them.
They always get overwriten by the mansion item locations.

Send me via PM your textures (original, unchanged ones) as a archive/pack.
And i'll chop em down ...

You want me to send you the .map? or just the pictures of the textures?

Textur -> Picture
Hard?, reading and using your brain to figure something out is known as learning.
Look into the Xml's and use your brain and you will gain the knowledge of adding external models into a map.
(Not in Radiant, but Gunz/Ingame).
The Xml's contain proper english sentences, that everyone could understand.

Its not meant to be harsh, its a advice.

He just need to look in Town.mrs or Ragezone if he can't solve it on his own.

i suggest going to gzmap.sourceforge.net , theres a shitload of tutorials and once in a while someone thats willing to help :).

Come on HellSniper lets not be so hard on the new mappers ;[.

But its looking good now but i agree send hellsniper your textures/pictures so he can size them down 10mb is way to big for only 96 brushes :P.

About importing models theres a good tut on www.gzmap.sourceforge.net in tutorials i think. you either have to make your own, or use MAIETS, making your own is alot harder though.

If he isnt capable to figure stuff that he doesnt know on his own,
then he is limiting himself to tutorials and will be forever a noob.
Asking and Looking into Guides isnt wrong but you wont get far with only that,
because they stop at a certain point, wich means that his progress in getting expirience also stops.
Figuring stuff without help -> growing.

I figured out some stuff on this project and I'm not following any tutorial.
About the sky, I thought that I couldn't do this on my own so I'm reading a guide to do that. First of all, when I read the guide, I try to understand how it's done, and then I will do it. By doing that way, you can learn how gtk radiant and other programs work.

I compiled the map's folder into .mrs, placed into Gunz maps' folder and When I ran GMD and loaded gunz, it said: Error. Can't Create Game.

You need to insert a spawn point in GTK (the large purple box = your character spawn point).

I did that way long time ago. Check the pics..
The problem was on highrise.rs.xml. Already fixed..

Enabling lightmap is just adding a light anywhere right?

You need to place light bulbs in your map (in GTKradient).
So the map will look 10000x better, cause now you got 0 shades 'n stuff.

The mrs file isnt 18mb because of not caulked faces.
Its because of the Textures.
If bigger then 512x512 you mostly will have realy big problems with post developing.
(Adding External Models, use alphas)
Resize em to 512x512 if your textures are bigger than 512x512.
Also, be sure to not use bmps.
Bmp is the worst Image Type ever, has alot of info that srsly no one cares about or needs.
Try to use PNG or JPG, i only recommend JPG with a good quality ratio.
(Wich Paint doesnt has, so dont try to resave the textures with paint to jpg...)

Update!

Added another base (2 in total) with 1 floor and I added some boxes in the building. Created a logo which says freestyle gunz (:o) and I added it on the texture like you are going to see below. (link)

-Add sky (animation if possible);
-Resize textures;
