Asylum 2 open beta testing

I'm back and I've already started working on maps again. This will be an open beta with a new version coming out every day (If I work on it every day.) Till it's done. I'll be doing this with all my maps from now on.

If you don't know me I'm an old fgunz gm and dev. Back when this server was known as heavens network and then became hack coders gunz.

I've made maps such as the original asylum, it was one of my first maps and I was surprised by it's popularity as it was a test to make detailed objects. Since then I realize it just causes lag to make intricate details.

Maps i've made include

The original sewer
Snow_Child
Tower of noobery
and many more I forget about

Well so far people have been using my maps on other servers and remaking them. I'm back to re-do some of MY old maps and make them better then anyone other then me could.


Anyway on to the map

NO SCREENSHOTS go in game with the map and see it for yourself.

I'd like feedback good and bad so I can make changes that you the people that play on it want.

Performance and Other Changes from First

*No tiny objects (Cups, syringes)
*No bottom of elevator it's fitted to the size of the elevator so no more flipping for you nooblets
*Removed details that caused the wall glitch. (A hole in the ceiling with my name in the sky.)
*No more strap beds (Caused performance issues.)
*More obstacles in hallways
*More details with less brush use (going for a you can do more with less thing.)

Asylum is a beloved map and im sure Asylum 2 will receive the same praise :D

Lol you never gave me that Asylum file.. but I managed to get it myself.. close to finish Asylum revamp :p.
Never knew you made Sewer (revamped that as well lol).

TBH, Asylum has some awful proportions. The sink is taller than the players, the ceilings are way too high, cups on the floor are double-supersized, etc. It'd be nice to see a more realistically proportioned Asylum is all I'm saying. I'm unsure of your current progress on Asylum II because I don't know how to play it yet. xD

If you wonder about why the cells with the doors shut are brushed out, it's because I might make the cell fronts glass.

I cannot wait to see the map, dude. Make SURE you make the red spawn in the back room with the actual Asylum thing! Would make the CTF mode SO much more fun.

"Couple things I'd love to see added to Asylum:

~ Bottom of the elevator removed so no one can flip to kill and be a ****.

~ More objects in the level.

~ The beds in the cells in red base to actually be standing up, and the cells(including the one right in front of the red spawn) to be open so hide and seek would be more plausible.

~ Add more rooms to blue base, possibly make that large hallway about half that size and add in rooms for the people who watch the crazies in the Asylum to sleep in?

~ Make the other room in the big room at the back easy to enter, possibly add a hidden hole that takes you down through something crazy kind of like in The_Building with Nagi.

Today's update delayed due to me fooling around in 3ds max and learning everything by myself.

Also the elevator bottom has been removed as I said, and I might take most of your ideas into consideration.

The proportions will be normal for the most part, if someone notices something looking odd in the beta releases they should LET ME KNOW.

For now I need to see what I can import into gunz, I'm thinking of animating some player models to be banging on their cells to get out. Not sure if I want to do that or make a new model of a freakier person in a straight jacket. If I even can.

Thing is, you dont want to many polys on your map ... players will experience fps lag otherwise.

Realspace 2 isn't designed for anything like that, Gunz will end up being bloated and laggy. Small animations are fine, a lantern swinging, a skydome spinning, or waves on the water, but having multiple entities that are controlled by bone animations will just cause extreme stress upon the system.

I get it how ur exited ur map is popular , but im 50 % / 50 % this will suck .. nothing can beat asylium . period .

It wouldn't be too many polys if I did it from the shoulders up and their head was shaking violently back and forth. (Sway twitch sway twitch With the door blocking the view of the guys non existent body.) This is also what i''m saying I'm testing it out. (Then again It's a stress test I'm more then likely not going to put it in the map in the end anyway.)

Also uh hystoria, I made asylum and even I think in my honest opinion it's not that good compared to what it potentially could have been.

Things and Rooms I'm thinking of adding/re-adding

Lobby with fountain
Small outside area
Guard Station for blue spawn (Small room where camera screens would be.)
Cafeteria
Remove some toilets and instead replace with a broken pipe to reduce brush count and for aesthetics.
Lamps of some sort but not sure what kind. I'm thinking some kind of old rustic sconces (Someone give me some ideas?)
Foam walled rooms.

I hope that all of us will love the New Asylum . Because I have a feeling that it is going to be fun . :)

Brush count? eh ... 3ds max isnt brush based?
Anyways, its just that some people report fps drops on realy basic maps (port lags for people for example) while others dont get fps drops at all.
(Though i guess my map Pavilion is one heck of a fps whore ... shouldnt have get all these lanterns and the reflecting water in there ...)

I highly recommend using 3ds max for maps, since there may be ( or not) also a memory leak from radiant maps. (wucas never did tests on dat afaik)
Just the fact that you can "fake" global illumination with worldedit and the more accurate collision compile is more then enough to start using max over radiant.
Once into max, its as simple as radiant, despite what lazy pirate may think/say about that.

You can ask me for help @ max, though i encourage you to try to solve the problems yourself first, you're smart enough to figure it out yourself.

But you shouldn't post your unprotected/unencrypted maps here, there are just far too many stealers who will just take your maps and use them on other servers without permissions (such as Asylum I). I have removed your download link for your (and our) own safety. Just give it to me when it's done and I'll add it.

They still can't take credit, though.

True, but why give others the opportunity to steal Freestyle's maps and use them on other servers like they did with his/our old maps :)

No reason. Just PM TRUSTED members and/or Staff with links to the map for download for private beta testing. Safer that way if you want it beta tested at the very least.

I understand what you mean; meh, I still prefer Blender to 3DS as well, but I gradually end up doing more and more in Max. I found myself actually building in there the other day and surprised myself ;D. As soon as you start messing with the modifiers in 3DS, it just seems easier in there (such as UV Mapping takes literally 2 min for a face piece which would be quite difficult to achieve in quadruple the time with blenders abilities).

@Nagi, I never did tests on GTK vs 3DS, but it wouldnt surprise me at all if there was a memory leak in there just because the size of a "normal" custom map's size after being loaded into the memory. Even mrs.exe has a minor leak that can mess with speeds and size and such; If you really wanted a "professionally" made client, you would have to drop all legacy products from the pre-source times (but really, the time spent doing these things isn't worth it in many cases, as I found out a week ago).

What I was doing was doing basic stuff in gtk and importing maps and exporting them into .3ds with this

That's why I said brushes. Less brushes in the end product will mean less polys.

Also I wasn't going to release the FULL map in the beta tests. Why would anyone steal my unfinished map with a ton of holes in it? They'd need to finish it. Even if they did that it wouldn't be the Original.

Radiant 1.5 comes by default with a brush export plugin.

I guess i'll just have to start showing screenshots to most of you. Maybe a gunz recording or two.
