I'm not sure but if you read the preview, it will be released with a total speed of 3.5 GHz.
If you want it overclocked to 7.0 which I don't recommend you because it's useless for gaming, you're gonna need powerful cooling system.

Whether or not you can play games on ultra depends on your graphic card, not on your cpu.
Ofcourse a sufficent cpu is needed to play certain games, however, the gpu has the most work to do.

Ps, even with 2 Titans in SLI some games dont run on ultra very well ...

Graphic rendering is all done on the GPU, the CPU deals with logic. Warcraft III is definitely not a CPU powered game, could run it at like 10% usage.

Though HellSniper made a valid point, he isn't correct. Games like Assassin's Creed III and Crysis III do need an i7 CPU to run the game properly on ultra settings, because they've ****ed up the game engine so bad that CPU spikes from 20 to 100, resulting into frame drops on lower CPU's.

I remember a big ass flame war regarding white TD being so cpu heavy many computers couldn't handle it at the time.

Maybe back in the days, but we're discussing i7 third generation here, that thing is at least 10 times faster than the Core 2 Duo's back in the day.

But yeah, games do benefit from faster CPU's (a very slow CPU won't be able to pass enough data to the GPU), but not when it comes down to i5, i7 or an extremely overclocked i7 (shitty engines excluded).

A stronger CPU won't make things go faster, it'll just have more idle time which means that the CPU usage will drop since that's just a calculation of said idle time.

E.g. crysis 2 on Core 2 Duo will give you > 100% load, resulting into things being delayed (as the CPU has no time to process it and queues it), crysis 2 on i5 will give you ~70% load, crysis 2 on i7 will give you ~30% load. Elements or whatever will not be faster on i7, it'll just have more time to process other things.

I never really bothered researching it.

nick does have a point though but it is only for badly coded games or very old games I reckon. I've no idea what is causes it but a certain speedhack-like-thing (yay for dashes---) can occur. or it might the emulator or something idk.

No idea, but I'm assuming someone simply released a speedhack or it was very poor programming updating the game logics without any sort of delay, assuming the CPU would be busy enough to delay it with at least 100 milliseconds.

Then I'm assuming the latter one, they were updating game logics (position updating, key processing, etc) endlessly, assuming that it'd take the CPU at least 50 milliseconds or so to process all those commands. With newer CPU's, it only took 5 milliseconds and as there was no delay, it updated 10 times more than the older CPU's, giving you the speedhack feeling. (Updating your position 10000 times every second instead of 100 times, meaning you'll be 100x faster)

When a game has bad coding with fuctions that repeat over and over the cpu could be a problem. an example of a game wich does this is Minecraft. Minecraft eats away at your RAM and cpu power the longer you play it. that is also way it crashes sometimes.

MMO's are often very CPU intensive especially while doing stuff like raids. If you play a game such as WoW an i7 CPU would definitely not be a waste.
For most games however, the GPU is the most important thing.

Most important is that all the parts sync well with each other. Just a good gfx card isn't going to get you anywhere. Besides that, GFX card is only important for high graphics games. Not such as Gunz, or for example the game you even noted, Minecraft.

The fact that you still think the i3 is going to be good enough for most game would let me assume you also say 512MB of RAM memory would be enough as would any build in graphic card. And yes if you're playing with that crap set up you'd probably have frame issues, but you'd have that with most other games.

Getting back to how this discussion started, you can't call Minecraft poor designed, there is room for improvement yet it does what it has to do. It runs on basic hardware and its still, by far, the best sand box game developed any time. If you can bring me any sandbox game with that many features that runs on basic hardware let me know.

I actualy played Darksouls on my old pc, had 2.4ghz (singlecore) and 2gb ram, windows xp 8D
Had a real old ati card, cant remember the model anymore... was downrated to middleclass back when i bought it, around 2008-2009 maybe, i dont remember.
Now, Darksouls aint the prettiest game but it did tax my old pc quite alot xD
