Anisotropic Filtering

So, I got tired of seeing how ugly gunz textures were the farther out you looked, and i'm working on achieving true high quality anisotropic filtering. So far i've only achieved anisotropic filtering x1, but it looks much better than the trilinear filtering that maiet used originally. You can immediately notice how clean the ground textures look, and the textures along the walls are much clearer than before. I'm still not happy with just x1 anisotropic filtering though, I'm trying to achieve x16

Lol difference should be blatently obvious so long as you click view this original image. You'll see in trilinear the walls are blurry and the sides of the walls are blurry. with af theyre much more clear.

look at the barrel in both pictures on the right its more smoother edges then the top 1

Look at the bricks on the main street on the ground further away from his character, should see a more clear pattern of the bricks.

Heres a more obvious example from another game, this will let you see what you are looking for. It has a more perceivable affect on things far away.

GLad you like it. Hopefully I can get different sampler levels working correctly (as in, get x2 af through x16 af working. sofar just limited to normal af, which is kinda annoying b/c you still get texture shimmer).

Undoubtedly this is gonna be an optional (in video settings) thing (at least I hope)?

I doubt my GFX card can handle 16x anisotropic filtering without immense lagging x)

I only use archetype tho

If you would add this make the options like 2×, 4×, 8× & 16×.

It'll be optional, but anisotropic filtering is basically a free setting regardless of gpu. Even on my old laptop its still a free setting.

You should make it the default (idk if you can do that though, not sure if that has to do with maiet etc) and people can switch to the lower quality textures.

1x af doesn't do anything, that looks more like 16x

It's def not 16x, I tried superflip, you still get massive texture crawling in superflip.

Oh it's possible to, but if i can get all levels of af working, it'll be a combobox, with trilinear set as the default. Some really old hardware can't support AF

linear, 1x af, 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x

idk wat u managed to set it to but its not 1x, theres literally no difference

Mind testing that on superflip? that'll let me know what I have set. I think at best I've managed 2x, maybe 4x, but ik from my experiments, superflip still looks really really bad in the distance.

Or get Zain to remake superflip ;).

Well idk how it is with GunZ but I can't use fa in any other game cause it leads to massive fps drops.

Well, in a situation like yours, there will be acombobox where you can just select trilinear instead of AF.

Glad you like it. I think im going to stop at this point, b/c it's much more clear than trilinear already.

What are your hardware specs? I can use AF without it causing any lag and I have a very modest system.

Yeah you won't have any sort of problems with af in gunz.

Lol well one day there will be some drastic differences to the engine. I'm looking into adding bumpmapping, but from everything I'm reading it can be a headache to do with lightmaps.

Lightmaps in gunz are prebaked and not "dynamic" as such bump maps are kinda pointless in gunz.
The only dynamic light sources are object lights which only affect models ie player models/npcs.

Wasn't Llamba or someone working on dynamic lightmaps? (which looked super weird tbh).

Ahh so static lights doen't play nice with bumpmapping eh? Alright, i can always toss bumpmapping aside and try working on something like SSAO.

I mean you can fake a bad bumpmapping by loading the lightmap model and rendering the bitmap with any of your 3d modeling/rendering software but then again this would be static again so its not worth the hassle.
Because the lightmap is prebaked and static ambient occlusion doesnt work well either, its going to make look maps really weird, do try it out to form your own opinion though.

Yeah I'll probably still try it out. You were right about the bumpmapping, it looked like garbage. If SSAO looks like crap too then I guess I can always try FXAA, it'd be a nice addition since people with a intel hd 2000 or lower can't use msaa.

Anisotropic filtering is for sharpening textures that are further away to keep it from becomming a blurry goo.
Its best observed on flat long surfaces (walls, floors, ceillings) Example

You'd see a big difference if i chose a better map. Maps like town receive a nice increase in texture quality.
