I'm doing maps next, I am currently creating a script that will optimize them all without needing any interaction.
I did find some maps with huge textures (7MB) that I managed to get down to 30KB in some cases.
The .FGZ filesystem we (are going to) use already does some good compression so the filesize of the whole client will not be significantly less, but it will matter when everything is loaded into the memory. Loading a game should also be slightly faster.

Might be best to move everything to BMP/DDS/TGA (forgot if they were lower in all cases vs JPG/PNG).
Though for UI I would go with PNG :p.
But good to hear you pick up the pile that was left behind that really needed to be dealt with .
In any case if you cannot figure it out or still need some minor pointers just ask, I do not mind helping out the squad.
