For me it is the champion designs and how you can work around the enemy items in the game;
There are 4 different item genres http://paladins.gamepedia.com/Items which you can upgrade by doing well in the game and get credits to buy/upgrade your items.
You base your items basically on the enemy team (if they have 1 or 2 tanks with shields you can buy the wrecker item that deals more dmgs vs shields for example).
There are also cards (aka preloads) you can customize to boost a certain aspect of your champion, for example I have a lot of extra healing and cooldown cards to get the most out of my support champions to heal my team more.
Also it is nice that you are not 100% on your role, sometimes as a support you deal tons of damage cause you dont have to heal 24/7, same goes for tanks for example.
TLDR; you base your stats and items on the enemy team to get the most out of it (aka counter play).

Here are mine http://paladins.guru/profile/pc/Ahoy21
Basically if I am a frontline I need a support and I am fine, same with if I play support I need a tank to block the damage for me.
Edit: Just watch some gameplay of the weird builds by FrostFang on youtube how you can turn your main roll of a champion around (like flank treebeard > while he is a support).
