    I don't see it as a sign of respect I see it more of an age thing. The only time I use sir when referring to friends is for sarcasm or a old joke. The only time the word sir is (from what I see) mainly used when your talking to an adult. When I say adult I mean someone beyond 20 I personally don't think people are an adult untill 30+ so I only call people sir if they are way older then I. So no I do not see this as a sign of respect but as jorge said.

    The word sir is a sign of respect yes but not when you refer to a buddy. I never use or have I seen the word sir used when talking to a friend and have it be serious.
