The downloaded launcher worked. Wonder why it was having trouble getting replaced but luckily it doesn't seem to be a widespread issue.

Windows Defender does indeed catch the new launcher with Trojan:Win32/Wacatac.B!ml. That is why it went missing.

The new launcher was re-analyzed by Microsoft and the false positive has been removed. It might take a little while before all users receive the latest updates in Windows Defender.

    Status: Completed
    User Opinion: Incorrect detection
    Analyst comments:

We have removed the detection. Please follow the steps below to clear cached detection and obtain the latest malware definitions.

    1. Open command prompt as administrator and change directory to c:\Program Files\Windows Defender
    2. Run “MpCmdRun.exe -removedefinitions -dynamicsignatures”
    3. Run "MpCmdRun.exe -SignatureUpdate"

Alternatively, the latest definition is available for download here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/definitions
It's a terrible thing, I think, in life to wait until you're ready.
I have this feeling now that actually no one is ever ready to do anything.
There is almost no such thing as ready. There is only now.
And you may as well do it now. Generally speaking, now is as good a time as any.
