Here is a great tutorial on low poly, It will show you around blender as well like short cuts and so on.
All i'm gonna say UV editing is very annoying and so is rigging. StephanM uses blender i think for rigging. I use Maya.

I actually use 3DSmax 2010 for rigging and exporting since we have the original plugins for it.
I do use Blender for modeling. : )
