    Faces are Singlesided (unless you set them to be twosided) therefor faces have 2 sides.
    Back and Front, Faces can be seen on the Front but not from the Back.
    Select the faces and let Blender recalculate the Faces Insides/Outsides.
    (Ctrl+N / Ctrl+Shift+N)

    About unwrapping: I rarely found any written tuts on it and if I did, they were really bad...
    My advice would be: Watch 1 or 2 vids on unwrapping and then just try it out on your own, and make sure to use a test grid to see if you did a proper uvmap.
