Never put an effect over the head, it kills it.
however, it's a tad too empty to fit the canvas imo, should've made it smaller or added some more stuff to it.
In example use a stock so you create depth and an actual space.
in this case it's just some ripple effects with a render blended in.

Not saying that it doesn't look good tho even tho it's not my style, but think outside the box man!
be creative with your stuff and don't be afraid to try stuff out.

and the best lesson is to take the haters constructive critisizm the best, even tho it doesn't sound nice people that hate you really give their honest opinions while people that like you will say good stuff just so they won't hurt you.
