/thread signifies the end of a thread, due to the fact the discussion is over. In the case I used it, the discussion WAS over. The question was answered, everyone walked away happy. I didn't NEED it locked because of this.
/lock indicates you're going to lock a thread, to PREVENT further discussion. If he was going to request a lock, he would have posted something along the lines of "someone lock this please". However, this was not done. Preventing further discussion, HEY! Hitler did that too.
