1. A DDOS is overkill for a single person, it required alot of other connected computers or zombies.

2. A Dos would be more legit sounding.

3. Even if either of the attacks happened you would still somewhat be connected to the internet not completely taken off.

4. Shit happens get over it.

Basically, an individual sends continuous "hits" to a specific port, flooding the path and effectively shutting down the server.

Not much you can do as a defense, but depending on the quality of the firewall and the network Admin, you may be able to filter out the attack.
