My suggestion would be avoid mainstream. Look for the main "gems" that you can find to start with.


Steins Gate, Shinsekai Yori, Death Note, etc etc etc. Watch those first as they are more enjoyable, and simply better. The big mainstream are just going to let you down after you get so far and it's nowhere near to end, with no good backbone story.
