    WARNING!
Reading this might scar you permanently, so I'd be careful.

I noticed a looong time ago, and since then it's always bothered me. But even more so recently.

When you watch an anime with a group of characters and something happens, anything literally. Whoever makes the anime HAS to show the face of every single character one by one, usually in the same order also. You can't miss noticing it, if they show the reaction of one character, they have to show the reaction of all characters. Only a few animes escape this, and may they be blessed by it's noodly appendage, but damn it's been annoying me.

I can understand why it is so easy to fall into the "REACTION ADDS VALUE" trap though. Things like this, over animating things, is a telltale sign of whether the writing is good enough to stand on its own. If the scene is well written, there is no need to show how each character takes the event, you can simply see the event, and imagine how each character will react based on their character development. There are also times when the writing IS solid, but the animators still over-animate the scene still. I assume this is simply to clarify their emotional state, but at times it is just insulting. I understand that when a guy gets stabbed in the heart, he is going to make an agonizing face and the people around him are going to act differently than they just did, you do not have to show me this. A theatrical overhead pan, or dramatic cut would be a much wiser choice by the staff.

So yes, I totally understand where you are coming from. It reminds me of how annoyed I get by the traditional rom-com moments (first hand touch, indirect kiss, eyes meet, in-head dialogue, etc). Sometimes in art you should just expect your readers to understand the emotions of the situation, rather than spelling it out for them.
