if so, what's a good introductory-level DSLR, i'm looking around the £200 price range ($300). i'd check google but i'd like someone who isn't being paid to review the product to help me out...

I've been taking a photography course for almost 3 years at my high school, there are a lot of DSLR cameras out there but it depends on what you like taking photos of and how many photos you take daily/weekly, or however often you use it. One of my friends recently bought the Nikon Coolpix L840 which actually seemed to have some sort of battery issue, he charger would rarely work. The camera costs around $240.00. If you don't know if you want this one, I'd only suggest you stick with Nikon/Canon, other camera companies such as Pentax or Sony truly don't have the knowledge or intellect when it comes to the visual and technological support of a camera.

Was considering a coolpix, only problem is that it's a point and shoot, not a DSLR. I'm mainly interested in photography as a side-hobby so maybe once a week on average?

I'm looking at the Canon EOS 400D or Nikon D40, they're quite cheap (around £150) and both a great introductory dslr. Do you have any other recommendations perhaps?

DSLR is a digital single-lens reflex camera, not a specific camera..?

Nikon is good for taking pictures of subjects
    Canon is good for landscapes

All dslrs are equally as great if you know how to use them and you have the right lenses for the job and shoot in RAW. imo get yourself a good used high megapixel camera that someone wants to get rid of since they usually come with extra lenses and accessories (lenses and accessories are the actual expensive stuff)

If i were to suggest, it would be any triple digit canon camera and if you can get yourself a double digit one that's even better.
