You only got something if the people who created an account with your link played actively for at least a few days or so.
Over a period of like 5 years (2012 > 2017), only people who wanted to abuse it used it. Maybe not even 1% was legitimate.

if by abuse you mean created an account themselves and used their own referral link, maybe an ip check/punishment can be applied to prevent this issue?

As I remember, for example: you invited a 2-5 friends and they were very very active, you can get more than 4ep. I think we can double Activity Points? If they're not playing you will receive nothing.
