I like the first version, but the second was more what I was going for. Perhaps you could darken the clouds of texture a bit more, while making the areas where light is a bit brighter?

Still greatly looking forward to the finished version, as well as the avatar. As expected, you did an excellent job for the time spent on it. All right before bed, too.
